Kubernetes mysql statefulset with root password

I followed the example in here https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/run-application/run-replicated-stateful-application/ to create a 3 replica mysql statefulset in kubernetes and everything works fine.

However, after I added root password, and modified the deploy yaml to include the password, mysql-1 always fail.

Here is how I add the password:

  1. I create a secret mysql-root-pass
  2. I remove the MYSQL_ALLOW_EMPTY_PASSWORD and replace it with MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD read from the secret
  3. Add -p$MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD to everywhere mysql is called in the yaml file.
  4. Still, mysql-0 is created and runs, but mysql-1 crashed:

mysql-1 0/2 Init:CrashLoopBackOff

Anyone has a working example on how to add password?

Edit: Add yaml file

If you created a secret like this (just as example):

kubectl create secret generic mysql-pass --from-literal=password=YOUR_PASSWORD

then use it as environment variable:

 spec:
      containers:
      - image: mysql:5.6
        name: mysql
        env:
        - name: MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD
          valueFrom:
            secretKeyRef:
              name: mysql-pass
              key: password

or mount it as volume:

spec:
  containers:
  - name: mycontainer
    image: mysql
    volumeMounts:
    - name: foo
      mountPath: /etc/foo
      readOnly: true
  volumes:
  - name: foo
    secret:
      secretName: mysql-pass
      items:
      - key: password
        path: my-secret/my-password

password secret is stored under /etc/foo/my-secret/my-password file instead of /etc/foo/password.

and a persistence volume to be used by statefulSet.
