How many RAM is in your host?

I think , you should try with less RAM in the guest(1Gb) for testing.

Maybe the problem is caused, the vm doesn't keep enough RAM for the host

What is the version of you VMware ws?latest?

If the problem is still alive, try the vbox. The vbox is not hungry than VMware ws.
