I checked that this class exists on hibernate core. the pom file has the correct configuration according to the official website hibernate search get started

The POM configuration is the following

It means that the class org.hibernate.service is not found in the WEB-INF\lib folder of the WAR of the web application. you miss out on hibernate-core add this inside your pom.xml

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
    <artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
    <version>5.2.2.Final</version>
</dependency>
